Why buy a New Longcase Clock instead of an Antique?

You may have been looking for a clock for some time and, in the process of looking at a lot of new longcase clocks, you will have noticed that they vary considerably in design and construction, in the content of solid wood and in the quality of the dials and movements etc. These same variables have applied to clocks over the centuries so that, apart from the clocks that were built by members of the original Clockmakers Company of Master craftsmen and which now command seriously high prices, very few antique clocks actually compare favourably with fine quality longcase clocks made today. Indeed many clocks were built by local carpenters, skilled at building barns but not fine pieces of furniture, so consequently, antique clocks vary greatly in style and quality and not to mention their ablity to keep time. The vast majority of antique clocks were built for very large houses, and so they are often far too tall for modern homes. Through the centuries, many have been the subject of alteration to follow later trends in styling, and many have been reduced in height to fit smaller houses. Some have been prone to infestation through lack of timber treatment and to dry rot after standing on damp solid floors. So antique clocks need very close inspection! In designing and making our clocks we consider all the qualities and character of the original clocks whilst we also consider the contemporary environment in which the clock is likely to find its home. The designs are not copies but are based on examples circa 1675-1850, with attention being paid to proportion and construction detail, couple this with the use of 'real'materials and traditional skills then we can create clocks with an authenticity and atmosphere comparable with their 'great grandfathers'. And of course, using precision quality movements made today, the clocks keep excellent time without any nursing and tweeking!

Buying a clock

Buying a mechanical clock is not something we do many times in our lives and It will give us great pleasure if you choose one of our clocks. As you have probably realized from our site all of our clocks (and their dials) are made by us. This means you will be buying one of a few rather than one of many, a true limited edition. It also gives you the opportunity to tailor your clock to your wishes, by either choosing different woods, English Oak, Cherry, Mahogany, or a painted finish, different styles of dials, an 'antiqued' dial and in the longcase clocks 'antiqued' weight shells and chains, or to have the brass left polished, different engravings or paintings, and even an engraved plaque to remind you of that special occasion. You could have a totally unique clock. Either way the choice is yours and it is important to us that you get the clock of your choosing. So we are not a 'Shopping trolley' site but a communications site where we ask you to contact us by :-

telephone 0114 272 4270 or by email mark@marklavertonclocks.com

Then you can specify your clock which will be especially made for you, not available through retail outlets, this would increase the price considerably without adding any value to the clocks! We look forward to hearing from you !
